Hero Gives Back: Supporting the S.F.-Marin Food Bank

At Hero, we make a habit of giving back to our communities. Our team volunteers regularly throughout the year, pursuing our many diverse causes and passions.

We have the good fortune of running a growing business and providing excellent customer experiences for our clients and their customers. Part of what feeds the empathy, introspection, and sensitivity required to attend to building those experiences is our ongoing connection to the communities where we live and work.

And in our community here in the San Francisco Bay Area, and in our offices throughout the country, it’s important to help those who are less fortunate.

On July 22, we had a great opportunity to give back to one such cause by volunteering our time in support of the SF-Marin Food Bank, which provides food and meals to more than 225,000 people from South San Francisco to West Marin. Their statistics are as astonishing as they are heartbreaking: 1 in 4 of our neighbors in the area the Food Bank covers are at risk of going hungry. This is our own backyard.

To combat this hunger epidemic, the Food Bank—with the help of volunteers and partners—has performed truly heroic work, each year distributing:

  • 49 million pounds of food, 60 percent of which is produce
  • More than 100,000 meals
  • Food to more than 44,000 children

This is merely a snapshot of the incredible work they’re doing to build a community where everyone can “obtain enough nutritious food to support the health and well-being of themselves and their families.”

We were eager to roll up our sleeves and lend a hand in the fight against the scourge of hunger. Eight Hero employees spent the day at the Food Bank in San Francisco with 50 other volunteers from the area. As Food Bank deliveries are subject to the requirements of the Commodity Supplemental Food program, each package—including milk cans, fruit, rice, etc.— had to weigh precisely 30 pounds. So we quickly organized into a chain line at the direction of our El Salvadoran supervisor, Vlad – who kept our work light and fun by playing DJ with tunes from Taylor Swift to Oldies. At the end of the day, we’d packed 900 boxes for delivery to elderly recipients, and packaged more than 8,000 pounds of cauliflower for delivery to the homeless.

“It was amazing to see how much we accomplished in a such a short amount of time,” said Hero volunteer Christine Corbitt. “Our guides at the Food Bank kept us focused and motivated, but also made sure we had a great time.”

Working with the Food Bank was a delight. They go to lengths to ease the process of participating so volunteers can focus the majority of their time doing the yeoman’s work to help get desperately needed food to the communities most at risk. And by volunteering our time to help the Food Bank we not only helped our community – we also strengthened our internal team’s bonds and reaffirmed one of our most important values.

Hero Gives Back is a focused quarterly effort of Hero Digital. We’ve been proud to work with The S.F. Marin Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, the Excelsior Food Pantry, La Casa de las Madres, Ocean Beach cleanup, and others.
