Women in Tech: Hang Hoang

Hero Digital is happy to feature Hang Hoang for our Women in Tech series. Hang encourages women to be confident and not hesitate in their choices. Read her story below.

Walt Whitman once said, “Keep your face always toward the sunshine, and shadows will fall behind you.”

The first in my family to graduate with a 4-year degree in the United States and the first to land a job in the United States, I am the only female in two generations to have a job in technology. It makes me so proud of myself! Not just being the first, but being willing to fight against my parents to go for this career (my parents did not approve of my choice, claiming that technology is a “men’s career” and I won’t make it).

Growing up, my parents were always busy, and they usually left me alone in the house when I was a kid. A computer was my only friend. Because I was exposed to technology when I was seven, it was almost unavoidable that my future career would be in technology. Besides, sometimes it feels easier to just “talk” to a computer instead of real people (I know, very introverted of me).

I love video games, but I also love coding languages. Understanding how things work physically in a computer’s hardware always makes me feel tingly as well!

When I think about my long-term goals for my career, I want to be a digital forensic investigator. I hope that Hero will be a stepping stone to help me achieve that goal.

For me, it is easy to cling to my mistakes and blame myself. But mistakes should only be a lesson to do better, not a rope that holds me back.

Before I knew how to be proud of my achievements, I did not think anything that I accomplished was “excellent!” or enough. I often feel as though I am a pretender in this career full of men, or the fact that I got to the United States was just pure luck, not skills. It is hard to let go and be proud of this path that I am walking in.

If I could offer advice to others, it would be this: Be confident. Don’t hesitate in your choices. The world does not wait for anyone. (Plus, this career brings new opportunities and knowledge every day. Why hesitate in something so awesome?)

I am looking toward the bright future ahead, and nothing can stop me.
